QUICK TAKE |
|
Who says cryptography can't be entertaining? Cryptonomicon is the first book in a trilogy that examines cryptography through historical fiction.
The novel tells parallel tales of a World War II US Navy mathematician working for a covert intelligence unit, and the present-day story of his hacker grandson who is trying to establish a data haven in the Philippines.
The generations-spanning thriller sees Stephenson exploring the early days of modern applied cryptography and the impact it has on the world today.
Cryptographer and author Bruce Schneier makes a guest appearance, writing the appendix for the Solitaire encryption algorithm he designed for the book.
As the first novel of three novels, Stephenson clearly intends to give cryptogeeks everywhere a mythic treatment.
