Cover of PKI by Austin
PKI:
A Wiley Tech Brief

by Tom Austin
$29.99 USA / $46.50 CAN
270 pages, softbound

Public key infrastructure is becoming a popular subject! Industry analyst Tom Austin's PKI is the latest publication to address a growing readership that is hungry for knowledge about this area of interest.

As the title suggests, the book is a tutorial about PKI technology. But the author's approach to the subject is what sets this book apart. Austin has made a clear decision to focus on the business issues surrounding PKI, and he has geared the contents of the book to that end.

Beginning with a basic introduction to public key cryptography and security issues, the book goes on to describe and explain the components of an enterprise-level PKI. Once this foundation is in place, Austin spends the middle of PKI discussing the business issues and drivers surrounding PKI.

The final third of the book is dominated by case studies. Austin cites and discusses five cases of government institutions and private enterprises that have deployed PKIs. A brief discussion of legal and standardization efforts, biometrics, as well as a sample request for proposal (RFP) for PKI, and a couple of pages of references close the book.

Non-technical decision-makers in organizations that are considering PKI deployment will gain from the book's focus on PKI and the related business issues. PKI technologists can gain an appreciation of the view from the other side of the fence.
